Viewing goggles from the likes of myvu and Vuzix have yet to become commonplace, mostly due to the fact that you would look entirely out of place whilst wearing them on the train to work. There is a rumour that Apple are developing a set of video goggles, which will allow you to view video files through them, which can be taken from an iPod or any other Portable Media Player. It is also though that Sony will be partnering with Apple to create the ideal technology for the screen which resides inside the goggles. I for one am excited about this, as Apple and Sony joint venturing will no doubt result in a fantastic end product.
If the goggles receive as much attention as the iPod managed five years ago, it will be a massive product and one which could follow in the footsteps of the iPod, albeit a far more ambitious creation. We will need to wait and see if this speculation comes to fruition, and hopefully one day portable video viewing will be possible via a trendy set of goggles, not something similar to Cyclops from X-Men.

Ford have designed a very new system called MyKey which is intended to assist in producing a safer driving experience for new drivers, who at times seem to think they are indestructible behind the wheel and that the laws do not apple to them, only others. The MyKey system enables parents to limit the speed of the vehicle and also the audio volume. The speed restriction is the obvious safety precaution, as when the speed which has been selected has been reached, the car will refuse to go any faster. The volume controller is merely an extra, but one which many of the public will be thankful for, eradicating the sound of five sub woofers blaring out heavy bass at every set of traffic...
Japanese Scientists invented a new type of battery, in the University of Waseda. This new battery is a flexible rechargeable battery, based on polymers. The development of this type of battery was conditioned by the permanently developing industry of portable devices, which become smaller and smaller each year.
Researchers are working for several years, but the scientists are Drs. Hiroyuki Nishide, Hiroaki Konishi and Takeo Suga, all of them from the Waseda University, are considered to improve the technology. Their development is based on a redox-active polymer film, which is about 400 nanometers thick. The charge carriers of this battery are the Nitroxide radical groups. Due its high radical density, these thin batteries have a high level of charging and discharging.
Dr. Nishide said that the high charge and discharge capacity of their development is one of many advantages it has over other organic materials, as the power of the organic materials is limited to the amount of charge they get.
Dr. Nishide also mentioned that it took only one minute to charge a pfilm polymer battery and that it’s life cycle could be over 1000 charges.
He also said that, there are also drawbacks in this development.
The Japanese scientistshave overcome this problem by photocrosslinking, though. This made the polymer more stable and stronger from the mechanical point of view.
In his opinion this film battery will make all technologies based on organic devices will highly benefit from this film battery.
Among devices, which potentially could need a flexible battery Dr. Nishide mainly mentioned small memory cards with integrated circuit. He said that within the next three years such cards would benefit from using this invention.
According to Dr. Nishide, in the future the battery could be also used in devices, requiring a higher power capability more than high-energy density, such as batteries in different electronic devices and/or in electric vehicles with motor drive assistance.

Vauxhall Motors Speed Limit Detector
July 4, 2008 – 7:30 am
British Vauxhall Cars Have New Camera That Scans Signs, Displays Current Speed Limit.Although various GPS units already have the ability to display the current speed limit (they’re pre-programmed in) of the road you’re on, this Vauxhall Motors invention seems even better. There’s a camera on-board that takes 30 snaps per second, then recognizing speed limit signs and translating that to a number to display on your dash.
This way you can know exactly what the speed limit is at all times, even when you’ve just transitioned from a high speed area to a low speed one that cops like to ticket in. In fact, if this system is good enough, it could be a decent excuse to tell the popos that their speed limit signs were too obscured that even a 30FPS camera couldn’t make it.
The Vauxhall speed limit detector is planned to appear on the upcoming Insignia sedan, and could be available on 2010 models of United States cars.

Advanced technology has been pushed in the form of EEG binaural beats and bone conduction that read brain frequencies and change it toward the applied stimulus, without having a side-effect on user’s hearing. With 4 wave profiles—Meditation, Focus, Learn, Sleep to choose from, it looks we’ve taken a major leap as humans, for this concept lets us gain a substantial control over our intelligence-fueling tool.

Spray on Skin Gun Shoots Stem Cells To Heal Your Open Wounds
June 26, 2008 – 5:23 am
The Armed Forces Institute for Regenerative Medicine invested $250 million in a project focused on therapies like the famous “Pixie Dust” that can help heal soldiers on the front lines in Iraq. The “skin gun,” it could spray skin-healing stem cells over a wound—helping it heal in a matter of hours.Because of its use of stem cells, a skin regenerating gun would certainly cause a stir among conservative types—but if you were caught out on a battlefield with a gaping wound, you would be begging for technology like this.
Given the relatively small amount of funding and the potential ethical roadblocks the military would run into trying to develop a skin gun, my guess is that we probably won’t see a device like this in our local pharmacy anytime soon. But it is interesting to think that it could be possible somewhere down the line.
Artificial Heart
June 4, 2008 – 4:56 am
An artificial heart is a prosthetic device that is implanted into the body to replace the biological heart. It is distinct from a cardiopulmonary bypass machine (CPB), which is an external device used to provide the functions of both the heart and the lungs. The CPB oxygenates the blood, and therefore does not need to be connected to both blood circuits.
Types:
1)Total Artificial Heart (TAH) implantation involves the removal of the native heart. It is a surgical procedure similar to heart transplantation with a human donor heart.
2)Cardiac (heart) assist devices differ from the TAH, in that the patient’s heart is not removed during implantation. Assist devices may include either a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) or a Right Ventricular Assist Device (RVAD) or both. As opposed to TAH implantation, the assist device serves to provide only a part of the total cardiac output of the patient’s heart.
This artificial heart you see here grosses me out, but count me in if it will be able to save lives. Originally invented by a human who is now too feeble to even row a boat, the artificial heart can pride

Verizon’s LG Dare Full Review
July 1, 2008 – 4:48 am
The LG Dare is really Verizon Wireless’s attempt to fit in, to offer a phone that’s more like the AT&T LG Vu and Sprint Samsung Instinct, not to mention Apple’s similarly priced iPhone 3G. The truth is, the Dare may not be as glamorous or well-priced as the Instinct, but it has a better browser, a motion sensor and some cool software tricks that make it a fine phone for people who choose to remain in Verizon’s walled garden. As I think we’ve firmly established, we call these iPhone clones because they are made superficially with the look and feel of the iPhone in mind. They are not direct competitors to the iPhone, as they don’t run on a smart, open platform like iPhones—or Blackberry and Windows Mobile phones—do. The Dare, like the Instinct, is closed and proprietary, geared to customers who like much of what the carrier has to offer, and would just like a better way to make use of it. And after spending some time with the Dare, I can safely say that, much like the Instinct, it really does let you do that.
Easier Access:
For starters, Verizon has done away with its dependence on unchangeable, annoyingly deep menus. With the Dare, you can drag any app or function directly to the desktop for one-click access.
E-mail and Web:
Let me get this off my chest first: The Dare browser is WAY better than the Instinct’s, both in rendering speed and page layout. You can navigate Gizmodo with very little trouble, especially if you’re going read-only.

Firefox Mobile :Fennec
June 13, 2008 – 5:15 am
The buzz about Firefox these days might be focused on the impending Firefox 3, but the folks at Mozilla are already thinking beyond that browser and beyond the PC. A blog post on Wednesday from Mozilla Labs’ head of user experience, Aza Raskin, shows off a video of a conceptual Firefox Mobile
The innovation, usability, and extensibility that has propelled Firefox to 200 million users is set to do the same for Firefox in a mobile setting.User experience is the most important aspect of having a compelling mobile product. Every bit of interaction and pixel of presentation counts when typing is laborious and screen sizes are minuscule.Designed for touch-screen interfaces not multitouch, like the iPhone the mobile Firefox browser opens up to reveal a bookmarks list and a “plus” button to open a new window. The browser controls are located to the left of the window and are accessible by panning horizontally.

If I were to travel in space, I sure as heck hope that I get one of these Ovei pods instead of being frozen in a cyrogenic chamber as Lt. Ripley was in the film Aliens. After all, feeling like a piece of meat in a fridge is no fun, and the Ovei pod from Oculas Group offers way more entertainment options. It won’t be for the ordinary Joe on the streets though, as the base of the Ovei starts from £50,000 upwards. Inside, you will find a 5.1 surround sound system, a 26″ LCD display, climate control and all that jazz to keep you comfortable throughout your journey, although with that amount of money, you can always spruce up your room with much more than what you’re getting from the Ovei. Of course, it won’t be that cool, but spending such an obscene amount of money in these economically tough times isn’t exactly the best idea in the world.
LeapFrog releases Tag Junior system
January 29th, 2009 by Edwin
LeapFrog’s brand name is strongly associated with the edutainment industry, and it comes as no surprise that their latest product is a toddler-sized “book explorer” known as the Tag Junior book pal. It will be out this summer, so kids can always get themselves prepped up for school during the summer holidays before they actually dive headlong into their books when school opens. The Tag Junior system was specially designed to cater for little hands and aims to help young ones build a lasting interest in and love for reading - something that is sorely missing among the youth today who would much rather want to be entertained passively by a game or movie without using their own brain to think. The Tag Junior system has its own nine-book library that will feature classic books, favorite characters as well as original titles that we’ll look at right after the jump.

January 28th, 2009 by Ally
Tired of all that pesky parenting? Well now you can pick up the 4moms Goodnight Sleep Trainer and take at least some of the thinking out of parenting. All joking aside, it’s a pain to figure out how long to let your newborn cry before you rush to their aid at night. If you rush too soon then they get attached and expect it, if you stay away too much then you’re neglecting your child. If you are getting overly anxious about doing the right thing, then maybe it is time to turn to an electronic device such as this to help you out.
Is it me or will the Kindle 2 be uglier than the First?
January 27th, 2009 by James
Gone are slant angles in favor of a flat white, rectangular design. You could call it a plain Jane. And if the scuttle butt is correct, the picture you see above is the 2nd version of what some believe is the best ebook reader on the market … the Kindle. And it may be here after Amazon’s press conference February 9th. Man, I didn’t think basic could look so ugly.
The BoomDesk with built-in speakers
January 25th, 2009 by Ally in
Although having your designated desk is nice, sometimes you need to work in other areas of your house. Be it because you need to watch the kids or watch dinner, it’s nice to able to move what you’re working on and hang out on the couch with it. This BoomDesk helps you with exactly that, in many ways. The deep compartments hidden underneath the desk lid would make switching rooms quick and easy. It would also be great for kids to do their homework on, especially kids that share a room and can’t seem to do their homework when their sibling is around.

Folks who holds presentations in corporate boardrooms and lecture halls often might want to check out another tool that could help them be more effective in their work - the Lumens PS660 Desktop HD Visual Presenter. Don’t baulk at the price of $1,995 though, as HD desktop visual presenters rarely dip below the $2,000 mark, making this one heck of a deal considering the functions and features that it has on the plate. The Lumens PS660 has the distinction of being the first SXGA desktop visual presenter in its class that boasts one-touch integrated audio and video recording, HDMI interface and SDHC support. Not only that, the PS660 also comes with other high end features including full HD 1080p resolution, true SXGA resolution output, 15x optical zoom and a five-year unlimited warranty.
The Tiny Personal Guard Alarm

The Tiny Personal Guard Alarm is probably one of the more simple ways of keeping yourself protected. It won’t work for every situation, but it might be helpful to some people. Especially the elderly that just need to get the attention of someone within the house, but still out of shouting range. If you make a habit of jogging at night or get nervous working the late shift, this might help put your mind at ease.

Apricorn DVR Xpander scores big on storage
January 23rd, 2009 by Edwin
Apricorn is name that you should know if you deal with personal storage, and the company has just released what they dub to be the highest capacity DVR external hard drive on the market, upping the ante with its 1.5TB DVR Xpander. Let us save you the headache of calculating just how many more backlog of shows you are able to run out before even that amount of space becomes insufficient for your needs - 1.5TB is able to add up to 843 hours of standard programming or 187.5 hours of high definition programming to your DVR. Just in case those numbers have yet to sink in, bear in mind that’s roughly the equivalent of sitting in front of your TV for 7.81 days straight without getting up or doing anything else except to enjoy high definition programming. Sounds like overkill? We definitely think so.
